Ethanol is the most common incredient in the hand rubs that we use to sanitise our hands in hospitals and in homes; it is also found in a range of products that we use on a regular basis – including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum, and perfumes. In Europe, ethanol is being considered for classification as both a carcinogen and a reprotoxic substance. However, ethanol-based hand rubs are a primary defence against healthcare-related infections, and any disruption to their use would have an immediate impact on patient outcomes
