After 300 years, Colombia retrieves its first pieces of the San José, the $17 billion ‘holy grail of shipwrecks’

Colombia has recovered the first artefacts from the San José galleon, a 1708 shipwreck long dubbed the “holy grail of shipwrecks.” The cannon, porcelain and macuquinas were raised under a scientific project that aims to study, not salvage, a trove valued in the billions. The find adds new depth to an ongoing legal battle and to centuries of fascination with the lost treasure.
