A Letter Won’t Always Be Postmarked the Same Day You Drop It in the Mail

Since Dec. 24, a postmark no longer shows the date you deposited a piece of mail with the U.S. Postal Service. That has serious consequences for mailing ballots, filing tax returns and sending other time-sensitive documents.
